Early management will increase significantly the chances of recovery.

Since 1991, I have been a practising ENT specialist at the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG). Later, I acquired a great deal of experience in ENT oncology and all its forms of curative and reconstructive surgery with microsurgery at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV) under Professors Ph. Monnier and Ph. Pasche.
After the initial ENT consultation, if a suspicious lesion is detected, I perform a biopsy with a scan or MRI ,depending on the location of the tumour. The FDG-PET SCAN is currently recommended for an accurate lymph node evaluation as well as for other remote metastatic locations.
Then I carry out an endoscopic assessment (direct pharyngolaryngoscopy, flexible and rigid bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage, oesophagoscopy with staining).

Once a disease evaluation has been completed, and before all treatment, each patient is presented to a multidisciplinary board with Professor Jacques Bernier and Professor Jean-Claude Horiod (specialists in radiotherapy), and Dr Volker Kirchner and Dr Mati Apro (specialists in chemotherapy). This offers patients the best chances of recovery, a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment, and occasionally the necessity for combining two or three therapeutic modalities.

My philosophy is to give the patient and his or her family all the necessary information concerning the disease and the different treatments possible, and to let the patient decide on the type of treatment. Naturally, the treating physician is always invited to participate in this discussion.
